As I reflect on the recent loss of my beloved grandfather, a man who lived just shy of his 99th birthday, I’m reminded of the profound impact he had on my life and one of the guiding philosophies behind Grit & Grace Adventures. While we didn’t travel much as a family when I was young, the stories my grandfather and grandmother shared of their global adventures helped sow the seeds of my deep love for exploration.
My grandfather embodied steadfastness, commitment, and an unwavering sense of joy. He taught me that life is to be lived fully—not just in the grand moments but also in the small, everyday experiences. His stories were rich with the kind of depth that only comes from stepping beyond your comfort zone—tales of meeting strangers who became friends, overcoming language barriers with a smile, and discovering beauty in every corner of the world.
Yet, it wasn’t just the far-flung adventures that brought him joy. My grandfather found connection and happiness in local activities —fishing trips, rounds of golf, woodworking, even bowling nights with friends. These everyday moments were just as meaningful, offering opportunities for connection, storytelling, and simple pleasures. He understood that adventure doesn’t always require a passport; sometimes, it’s about being present and open to the experiences around you.
Travel, in many ways, mirrors the lessons my grandfather imparted. It’s about breaking down barriers—not just physical ones, but also the invisible walls we build around our hearts and minds. Travel teaches us to connect with others, to view the world through different perspectives, and to recognize that beneath our differences lies a shared humanity. These are the values my grandfather lived by and the ones that guide every Grit & Grace Adventure.
One of my favourite memories is how my grandparents would recount their travels with such vivid detail. They weren’t just sharing stories, and a lot of pictures (slide shows); they were reliving moments of connection, community, and understanding. Whether it was a meal shared with a local family or a quiet moment of reflection in a far-off land, their adventures were a testament to living life joyfully and fully. It wasn’t about the destination but the people they met along the way, the lessons they learned, and how those experiences shaped their lives.
At Grit & Grace Adventures, I believe that travel is more than just seeing new places—it’s about creating connections, fostering community, and embracing the unknown with open arms. Every journey I plan is infused with this philosophy, ensuring that each trip is not just an escape but a transformative experience.
In many ways, my grandfather’s legacy lives on through Grit & Grace Adventures. His teachings of living life to the fullest, finding joy in every moment, and valuing connection above all else are the cornerstones of my approach to travel. As I continue to explore the world, I carry his spirit with me, knowing that every adventure is an opportunity to honour his memory and the lessons he lovingly shared.
To those who travel with me, I hope you find the same joy and connection that my grandfather found in his adventures. May you return home with stories that fill your heart, lessons that enrich your life, and a deeper understanding of the world and your place in it. Travel shows us that, no matter where we come from, we all long for the same things—peace, love, and kindness for all. This is the legacy my grandfather leaves behind, and it’s one I’m proud to carry forward in every journey we undertake.
In memory of my grandfather, who taught me to live joyfully, embrace adventure, and always find beauty in the journey.
