Today, the sun begins ascent into Capricorn, marking Makar Sankranti, a celebration of transformation, renewal, and release. Here in India, as I immerse myself in a 300-hour intensive yoga training program, the symbolism of this day feels particularly profound. My days start at 5 a.m. and stretch long into the evening, wrapping up at 9 p.m. Every moment is accounted for—what to do, where to be, when to eat, when to rest. And you know what? It’s a relief.

For the first time in what feels like forever, I don’t have to make decisions. After years of carrying the weight of managing multiple businesses, being a stepmom, planning a wedding, managing a household, and holding space as a partner, this break from decision fatigue is a welcome gift. It’s humbling to relinquish control, surrender to a rhythm that isn’t mine, and trust in the process.
This morning, as the winds changed direction, they swept through the trees with a newfound urgency. Yet amidst their movement was a stillness—an energy of calm within the shift. This stillness echoed through our Makar Sankranti ritual: writing down the things that no longer serve us, setting those intentions aflame, and watching as the smoke carried them away. It was a poignant reminder that letting go isn’t about giving up but clearing space for what’s next.
For so many women who join me on Grit & Grace Adventures, this moment mirrors their lives. They arrive at my retreats after years of holding everything together—making decisions for their families, their work, and everyone but themselves. They come, seeking a reprieve from the weight of responsibility, hoping to find clarity and connection and, most importantly, rediscover themselves.
Makar Sankranti teaches us that life has seasons, and we are allowed—no, encouraged—to honour them. To let go of the old narratives and expectations we’ve carried for far too long. To surrender to the unknown. To trust in the stillness between transitions.
As I sit here, halfway across the world, guided by my teachers and immersed in this intensive yoga training, I realize how essential it is to let others guide us sometimes. To release control, honor the natural cycles of life, and step back into our roles feeling lighter, freer, and more ourselves.
To all the women reading this: What would you let go of if you gave yourself permission? What burdens, expectations, or habits would you offer to the flames? And what would you create in the space that remains?
The sun is moving northward. The winds are shifting. And you, too, are invited to step forward into a brighter, freer version of yourself.
Let’s embrace this season of transformation together—with grit, grace, and an open heart.
What will you release today? And what will you welcome as you step into the year ahead?
In adventure and friendship
Penny
